Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital renovated approximately 32,000 s.f. of space in an existing in-patient psychiatric hospital facility.
**Project completed by BB&W Principal while at Kaim Associates, Inc.
The owner had an abandoned building, Building C, on a large campus in the city of Houston that needed to be renovated and brought up to code in order to accommodate more patients.
The renovation comprised of 75 beds for patients, with 35 rooms for semi-private accommodation and 5 rooms for private patients. It also featured 4 treatment rooms, 4 seclusion rooms, Day Rooms, Therapy Rooms (for both group and quiet activities), consultation areas, administrative offices, a conference space, storage rooms, and various other support areas. The target demographics was adolescents, children, and geriatric patients.
Utilizing the design of the building shaped like a cross, we positioned the main staff operations at the point where the wings intersected. This arrangement enabled staff to have full visual control of each wing, while at the same time providing an effective way to separate wing for each patient group. As a result, we could manage the interactions between these distinct groups effectively.
